Mother's Day Contest Entry - From Kathy to her Mom Barbara

Here is another wonderful tribute - from Kathy to her Mom, Barbara. Thanks Kathy for sharing your Mom with us.

(Kathy's Mom - Barbara)

My Mom is not only my mother, but my best friend. She lived a hard life bringing up her children. She was married two days after she turned 18 years old and then she had me (her first baby - Kathy) 14 months later. I was only two months old and she was pregnant with my sister Debi. She had one kid for each arm. My Dad worked a lot and was hardly ever home and therefore, my Mom brought us up almost like a single mother. She was always there for us in every way. We did not have a lot of money and we lived in the country in an old house with a lot of problems. We had a lot of soup and sandwiches when we were kids, but Mom always made it seem special. Any time we passed the general store, my sister and I would say "candy" and she would pull the car right in (even though most of the time, it was the last of her money). My mother would make up games for us to play. She would shine flashlights on the ceiling and she would make up stories at bedtime. It wasn't all about money back then, but family and picnics and I have wonderful memories. I can remember my Mom doing a lot of things alone, like getting Christmas presents together and trying to assemble bikes for us. She always had a smile, even though a lot of the time, she never received a gift for Christmas herself. I grew up and had a baby myself and unfortunately my baby was born with spina bifida. The babies father left me. Now I was the single mother - for real. My Mom invited me back into her house and she was there through my labor, rubbing my back until she was exhausted and then staying with me until I got back on my feet. My son did not have a good outlook at first and needed major surgery at only a few hours old. He was in the hospital for a few weeks and then finally was released. Mom went to all of the doctor appointments for my son with me (23 doctor appointments the first month he came home) and then I ended up back in the hospital with an infection when the baby was only a few months old. She took care of him (sick as he was) and then actually quit her job at the bank because everything was so out of control. As the baby got older, he was looking better and better. I don't think I could have made it through the most difficult time that I experienced in my life, if it wasn't for my mother. She is my inspiration and I only hope that I can carry on and be like her. She took care of my Grandmother too and I want her to know that I will be there for her if she ever needs me. Everybody loves her that she comes in contact with. She is kind, faithful, beautiful, strong, sensitive and really funny (almost like Lucille Ball in some of our situations) and I just love her so much. I could never ask for a better Mom and I think we are so close because we are so close in age. Most of my fondest memories in my life have been because of my Mother. She is very special. I can't imagine anything being good enough to give my Mom. I think she really deserves something like a limo ride to a spa, lunch with her three girls and a gift certificate for a new outfit. Thank you for this opportunity to be able to tell someone about a real Mom.

Little Perfect Somethings - Dwell Studio Bottle Holders

I love Dwell Studio's bedding and it's really great that they are expanding their children's line. I recently bought an expecting friend a stroller blanket and hooded towels in Dwell's dots pattern. I don't know how I missed Dwell's adorable bottle holders, because they would have been a hit. Dwell Studio's bottle holders are made out of coated canvas. The insulation keeps baby bottles cold or warm. They come in an array of patterns so you can coordinate with other Dwell products. They are the perfect gifts for new or expecting mothers. The bottle holders can be purchased for $20 each at Giggle.

I stopped by Saks this afternoon and came across a great new product from Agraria called the TasselAire. Agraria makes wonderful home and personal care products and it doesn't disappoint with the TasselAire. The TasselAire elegantly diffuses fragrance throughout your home. You simply hang it on a doorknob or any other convenient spot in your home. There are eight gorgeous fragrances and my personal favorites are Lemon Verbena and Riviera Pear. The TasselAire is the perfect housewarming gift and can be purchased at Saks, Neiman Marcus, or Agraria for $35.

"My Perfect Mother" Mother's Day Contest Entry

I'd like to share one of the entries we received for the "My Perfect Mother" Mother's Day Contest from NKJ in Piscataway, New Jersey. It's a wonderful tribute to her Mom. Thanks for sharing with us why you think your Mother is the "Perfect Mother". Keep those entries coming everyone. Submit your entries to the "My Perfect Mother" Mother's Day Contest to Blog Submissions. And, for more information about this contest go to "My Perfect Mother" Mother's Day Contest.

NKJ's entry

I was blessed as a child to have a mom who knew how to have a lot of fun. I have precious memories of summers with my mom and I am so thankful each day that she took the time to cultivate a creative spirit within me. As a second-grade teacher who loved to teach through art, she knew how to combine learning and fun. At home, she didn't mind if we got dirty as we painted, role-played, and did arts and crafts projects. Honestly, we just loved imitating her. While my sisters and I played with our crayola crayons, mom painted away with her canvas and easel. Most of our fun activities didn't cost a lot of money mainly because our family didn't' have a lot of money. But that was OK because my mom knew how to plan great adventures for us. Whether it was staying home to paint the beautiful summer day outside or taking a trip to the museum to look at art, she inspired us to be passionate about the art of expression. Because of her, I'm a successful photographer who is passionate about capturing all of life's perfect and not-so-perfect moments. Just as she expressed herself through her painting, I learned to express myself through my own artwork and for that I am forever grateful. She made our family stronger through her presence and has helped me to make my family stronger because I strive to be like her every day. I hope to pass on that same creative spirit to my kids and I hope they always know that they didn't get from me, or from, their dad, but that the creative spirit within them was a special gift from their grandma.

That Perfect Gift Of The Week - Shipley & Halmos Trench

Ok, so I know it doesn't seem like Spring has arrived in NYC, but despite the crazy wind chill today, it's soon going to be time to switch our bulky, heavy jackets for spring jackets. I've been on the hunt for awhile and the other day came across a great trench that I fell in love with. The Shipley & Halmos trench is lightweight and the bow at the collar of the trench makes it extra special. It comes in Khaki, a great neutral color that can be worn with any outfit. The trench is the perfect gift for a hip mother or trendy girlfriend. You can purchase the Shipley & Halmos trench at Steven Alan for $475.
